Title

Persephone and Demeter

This is the tale of Persephone and Demeter.

This is the tale of those who remain silent to the threshold of existence.

This is the tale of the deaf and blind and those who have lost their voice. They lost their hands.

This is the tale of those who transform. Of those who grow wings. Of those who sing.

Of those who sow.

Of those who bring life!

The Descent
Persephone had the task of painting the world with flowers. While fulfilling her purpose, straying from the company of her friends, she was suddenly taken to the Underworld against her will.
The girls were paralyzed, in astonishment and fear. The nymph Cyane tried in vain to save Persephone. So strong was her grief, that she burst into tears and her body became a lake.

The Search
Demeter, Persephone's mother, wanted to know about her daughter. But Cyane no longer had a body, no longer had a mouth to explain. And the girls didn't know what to tell her...
Blinded by grief, Demeter sent an icy wind over the world that made the land barren.
Without knowing whom to punish, she punished the girls: grew them feathers and wings to search for Persephone all over the world.

The Ascent
The land did not produce and the world suffered from hunger and cold.
It was decided that the daughter should be returned to her mother, to alleviate humanity's suffering.
To be able to return, she should not have tasted death! However, Persephone had eaten some pomegranate berries... For that reason, she was ordered to spend part of the year in the Underworld.

On the months she returns to her mother's side, she brings the flowers and the warm breeze with her again.
She is both dread Persephone, and the bringer of the fruit.

This series of pictures was loosely based in the myth of the abduction of Persephone, the Goddess daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Some scenes are depicted in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, others in Ovid's Metamorphoses.
